About Asmat Travels

The short version

Asmat Travels is a notebook about places in New England that reward a second visit. It is published by Asmat Media LLC, a registered New Hampshire Limited Liability Company, from an office on Elm Street in Manchester. The company has exactly one product, and you are reading it right now. Nothing on this site is for sale, and no trip, room, seat, or ticket is ever arranged here.

The notebook keeps two sections. Rounds follows a single place across seasons and years, with the visit count printed near the top of every entry. Errands covers a short trip made for one specific reason, usually finished well before dinner. Both are written by one person, checked against public records, and corrected in the open whenever they turn out to be wrong. The two sections share a single rule: the place has to be worth the drive a second time, or it does not appear.

The story

I moved back to Manchester in 2019 and spent the first two years driving the same forty-mile radius. The notebook began as a paper one, kept mainly so that I would stop asking the same questions twice. In June 2021 I formed Asmat Media LLC, partly because a company keeps the paperwork tidy, and partly because writing gets more serious once it has an address. For four years the entries stayed private, which is a polite way of saying that nobody had asked to read them. The radius grew slowly, from the river and the mill yards to the notch roads, the coast, and a quarry town fifty minutes southwest.

The name is a smaller thing than it sounds. My byline is Asma Tarrant, and every desk calendar, library card, and parking pass I have owned shortened it to Asma T. Somewhere around the third paper notebook the two halves collapsed into one word, and the folder on my desk simply read Asmat. When the company needed a legal name in 2021, I stopped inventing better ones and used what was already written on the folder. It means nothing grander than that: a first name, a last initial, and a person with no talent for naming things.

The public version launched in January 2026, once there were enough return visits to make the format honest. Entries have gone out steadily since, fifteen by July, built on four years of driving and one patient winter of typing. The company publishes the notebook, holds the domain, and pays the hosting provider, the coffee, and the parking meters. There is no staff, no office beyond a room with a north window, and no plan to grow past what one person can verify. Twice a month is the publishing rhythm because that is what returning to real places actually allows.

What has not changed is the rule the paper notebook started with in the first place. A place enters the record as a round only after three visits in at least two seasons. That rule costs me the fast entries, the ones written on the drive home from somewhere brand new. It has also saved me from publishing three confident paragraphs about a town I saw for ninety minutes in the rain.

What the company does

Asmat Media LLC exists to publish and maintain this notebook, and it does not do anything else for a living. The work is ordinary and mostly unglamorous, which is roughly how it should be described.

  • Plans and makes return visits to places within about a day of Manchester, New Hampshire.
  • Writes, edits, and files the entries in Rounds and Errands, twice a month.
  • Checks practical details against public town, park, library, and state pages before publication.
  • Publishes corrections as dated lines at the foot of an entry, rather than silent edits.
  • Sends The Margin, a short reader letter, and keeps the address list to itself.
  • Answers reader mail from the desk during the posted hours, in the order it arrives.
  • Keeps the archive online and readable, including the older entries that have since been corrected.

What it does not do

This second list runs shorter and carries more weight, since it draws the boundary the site works inside. If something below appears to be happening here, it is a mistake, and I would like to hear about it through Contact. The list is written plainly so that a reader can hold the notebook to it later.

  • It does not sell or arrange tickets, tours, lodging, transport, or any part of a trip.
  • It does not take payments, hold reservations, or act on behalf of any carrier or hotel.
  • It does not accept free stays, comped meals, hosted trips, or paid placement in an entry.
  • It does not rank places against each other or hand out scores, stars, or badges.
  • It does not offer legal, medical, or financial guidance, and it never will.
  • It does not sell, rent, or trade reader information to anybody, for any reason.

How the notebook is funded

The running costs of this site are modest and are covered by Asmat Media LLC out of its own funds. Those costs are a domain, a hosting provider, a form delivery service, fuel, parking, and an unreasonable number of library photocopies. Readers support the notebook in kind, by sending corrections, local knowledge, and the occasional argument about a bridge. Should consent-based advertising ever be switched on here, it would carry a plain label, stay outside the entry text, and appear on the Cookie Policy page first. No advertiser, sponsor, or partner has any say over which places are visited or what an entry concludes about them. The notebook takes no payments from readers either, so nothing on this site sits behind a wall or a form.

Who writes it

One person writes this notebook. Asma Tarrant founded Asmat Media LLC, edits every entry, drives to each place named in one, and reads the finished page out loud before it is filed. She lives in Manchester, New Hampshire, and has been keeping notes on the same stretch of the region since 2019. Her background is in library work, which shows in the habit of checking a fact twice and citing where it came from. She prefers early mornings, gravel parking lots, and buildings that have been repaired rather than replaced. The site uses a drawn monogram instead of a portrait, because the notebook is about the places and not about the face in front of them. Reader mail reaches her directly at the address in Contact, and she answers it herself. She writes the entries by hand first, then types them, which is inefficient and has never once been up for debate.

Independence

Asmat Travels is an independent notebook about places worth a second look, and independence here is a working rule rather than a slogan. No town office, chamber group, carrier, hotel, or reservation platform reviews an entry before it is published. Nobody is given advance notice of a visit, and nobody is offered the chance to correct a draft in private. A town that dislikes an entry has the same route as any reader, which is to write to the desk with the facts. Errors get corrected in public, with a date, once a reader or a records check shows that the original line was wrong. The terms that govern use of the site are on the Terms of Use page, and how reader data is handled is set out in the Privacy Policy. Accessibility work on the site is described on the Accessibility page, and it is treated as maintenance rather than as a favor. If you want the practical rules of the notebook rather than its manners, the FAQ covers them in four plain categories.
